For takeoff set flaps to 15° and use about 3 notches of up trim. At takeoff power begin
rotation at 85 kts and she'll lift off at about 105 Kts. Climb out at approx 1500 fpm.
Gear up on positive climb. Initial climb at 114 kts until 1500' AGL then reduce climb rate to
let the airspeed increase. As the airspeed passes 131 kts retract flaps and reduce the throttle
for the climb. Adjust the vertical speed to hold the airspeed at 160 kts throughout the climb.
The ATR42 is mainly used on short regional flights so a cruise altitude of 15,000 to 20,000 ft
is normal. Level off and reduce the throttle and let the airspeed increase to the cruise speed
of 260 kts IAS.
The descent rate is normally at -1500 fpm at about 240 kts, maintain this speed by using the
throttle. The holding pattern speed is 170 kts. While nearing the airport maintain 210 kts and
slowdown to 170 kts to intercept the ILS. AT 5 miles out, lower the gear and set falps to 15°.
As the airspeed passes 150 kts set flaps to 30° and adjust the power to land at about 117 kts.
45° flaps are not normally used (only for emergency landing). On touchdown use reverse pitch
and spoilers to slow down then below 50 knots wheel braking may be used.

The ATR42 is built by AVIONS DE TRANSPORT RÉGIONAL a joint company of Aérospatiale (France)
and Aeritalia (Italy). The aircraft is a high-wing twin-turboprop transport aircraft embodying
a number of advanced technology features in the fields of aerodynamics, structures and
equipment. Basic design targets were good economy, a high level of field performance, CAT II
instrument landing capability, and a wide-body standard of comfort. The cabin is fully
pressurised and provides 4 abreast seating for typically 50 passengers. The aircraft is powered
by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW120 gas turbine engines. The ATR42 made it's first flight in
August 1984.
